Our girl came over for the weekend and we went to the Jazz Festival, among other activities. The weather was nice and we had a great time together.

Shooting Update

A news report said the victim was 21 years old, got shot in the leg and was taken to the hospital (I saw some blood on the sidewalk yesterday even though someone had tried to rinse it off). The shooter has not been arrested. Cops are still working on it.

Shooting

We finished our supper and headed out back for a little walk. There was a police car on our corner blocking traffic and lots of flashing lights a little further down the block. We got down to where locals were milling about behind the caution tape with about 15 patrol cars and dozens of cops. People said it was a shooting. They said it sounded like a machine gun.  Someone heard a woman scream. Somebody said “ he’s 21. He’s not a kid. He’s a devil.” Whether that was the shooter or a victim I don’t know. We did not see a body or any blood. There were plenty of shell casings laying in the street so it was clearly some kind of automatic weapon. It’s just a shame that some people in our government and society can’t step up and do the right thing about banning assault weapons.

Macy’s

Went in to Macy’s downtown.
It’s in the old Marshall Field’s building.
Looked at the historic Walnut Room on the seventh floor. They have started decorating for Christmas up there.

Museum of Science and Industry

Went to the science museum on Labor Day.
It has changed a lot since the late 80’s when it was free to get in and we lived 2 blocks away.
It’s very nice. See photos below.
New entry with 2 levels of garage parking.
I’ve always been a fan of miniatures. From tiny Chicago to the fairy castle there were plenty to see.

Time travel down the street of yesteryear.

The U505 submarine area has been expanded.
An area about oceans and all the plastic trash in them.

Japanese Garden

Rode our bikes to the Japanese Garden in Jackson Park.
It was a very nice, peaceful spot.

Concert

Went to a free concert at Navy Pier. First up was a blues singer/guitarist who we first saw back in the late 80’s, Joanna Conner. She was better than ever.

ISAC

Stopped by the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures Museum in Hyde park, formerly known as the Oriental Institute. It was much better than I had expected.
